If Man Were Meant to Fly...
The terminus of Capitol Drive in Shorewood at the 200-foot plummet to Atwater Park has long been an irresistible draw to those seeking a dramatic end to their tortured lives, or occasionally the overserved who have been struck with the sudden desire to know the feeling of flight. Shorewood has gone to great lengths to remedy this behavior in recent years, going so far as to install the infamous “letter man” statue to close off a direct path for potential drive-offs. But no deed of the living can appease the dead. When the wind whips off Lake Michigan, the water lashing the beaches and bluffs of Shorewood is particularly brutal. Locals know if you stand in this haunted place at night and listen closely as the waves thunder ashore, you'll hear the unmistakable sound of a gasoline engine, redlining as it leaves the ground.
