The Lake of the Demon in Muskego, Wisconsin
Lake Denoon, as it is known today in Muskego, was known by a different name to the original Potawatomi settlers of the area, though it has always been considered a haunted place. Mbes Mje-Mnedo, the Lake of Evil Spirits. The lake was formed by glaciers thousands of years ago, and is said to be the underwater home of nambi-za, the water panther. Larger than its landborne counterpart, the water panther has the head of a moutain cat, whiskers like a giant catfish, a long, copper tail and a saw-toothed back. Nambi-za lures men and women underwater as its prey, where they disappear in a flash, taken forever into the underworld. The Potawatomi say Nambi-za killed Chibiabos, wolf brother of the legendary hero Nanabozho, setting off events leading to the great flood of antiquity.
