The Witches' New Year
Peaceful, tranquil Greendale. In its 76 years, you might think nothing has ever happened to this sleepy little hamlet. Officially founded on All Saint’s Day 1938, Greendale holds a secret pagan history wrapped up beneath its suburban velour. The old residents of what was now called Greendale, Gaelic Celts whose ancestors had been driven from their Irish homeland for refusing to give up their pagan traditions, were angered at the residents of this new federally-appropriated township for uprooting their small, agrarian community. That founding day fell on Samhain, from dusk on Halloween until sunset November 1, the pagan farmers kidnapped and sacrificed the youngest among the interlopers to the Aos Si, making this town one of Wisconsin's most haunted places. Not to be intimidated, the hearty settlers rallied around the families of the lost, ever more determined to provide a safe and boring home to all their children.
